BIO

Tim Saternow is a painter and theatre designer who lives in New York City.    Until recently Tim Saternow was a Professor at the University of Connecticut teaching Theatre Set and Lighting Design.
 

Tim successfully worked in professional theatre and TV as a set and lighting designer for twenty-five years (university teaching for the last fifteen).  As a set & lighting designer, Tim designed for Broadway, Off Broadway, many Regional Theatres and as an Art Director for television and film receiving an Emmy nomination in 1995 for the Hallmark Hall of Fame production of The Piano Lesson by August Wilson.

He left the University in the Fall of 2007, moved to New York and is now a visual artist painting full time.   He is currently at the Art Student’s League studying painting under Paul Ching-Bor.

He grew up in New York State and has lived in Seattle, Pittsburgh, and the countryside of Eastern Connecticut.   Tim earned his BFA from SUNY Purchase, and his MFA from Yale University, with additional study of drawing and painting at the Art Student’s League, NY.

Tim’s paintings of Cape Cod seascapes have been shown at the George Billis Gallery, NYC; Dodd Center Gallery, Storrs, CT; The Manhattan Borough President’s Office Gallery, NY; The Brick Gallery in Essex, CT, and Artists in the Country, Woodstock, CT.   His theatre set design paintings and drawings have appeared at the Prague Quadrennial 2003, The Czech Republic, and in AMERICAN THEATRE magazine (November 2003), and his design work has also been published in the text book Scene Design and Stage Lighting (Seventh and Eighth Editions) by Parker, Wolf, & Block. TD&T, Theatre Design & Technology magazine, and the Yale THEATRE magazine.

Tim’s theatre design work includes the lighting for the Broadway musical SQUONK at the Helen Hayes Theatre in 2000.  Selected designs in regional theatres include the Seattle Rep, The Berkshire Theatre Festival, Arkansas Rep, The Juilliard School, Connecticut Repertory Theatre, American Jewish Theatre, PlayMakers Rep., Paper Mill Playhouse, Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, Seattle Children's Theatre and the Yale Repertory Theatre.   He also worked on many Broadway shows, New York City Opera, Live from Lincoln Center, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and the Children's Television Workshop.

He is a voting Member of The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (THE EMMY AWARDS), Los Angeles, CA; and United Scenic Artists Union # 829, NY; a member of USITT - United States Institute for Theatre Technology; and a member of OISTAT: Organisation Internationale des Scénographes, Techniciens et Architects de Théâtre  (the International Commission of Theatre Design, Technology and Architecture).
